Mommy's Kickboxing Performance & Happy Birthday to Mommy!

Upon returning from the holidays, I quickly got back into my exercising routine, since I did nothing but eat while we were away, so I was desperate to start as soon as possible.  Well, after my first class back, our instructor informs us that a couple of dance studios are holding a demonstration/performance on the 23rd of January - 2 weeks away (with about 20 or so different routines) and he has decided he would like to showcase his classes and have some of us do a 6 minute kickboxing routine. So he asked for volunteers and....yes of course, I said that I would do it!  Little did I know that this so-called demonstration was actually what we call a "recital" for kids from about 3 years old to the oldest being maybe 15! And little did I know that this would require almost daily 2 hours practices. So while yes, it was great exercise, my body felt like it was about to fall apart come the 23rd, and I also felt a bit silly being one of the oldest people on the Jonker Street stage performing for hundreds and hundreds of strangers!  Let me tell you there was quite the crowd...no telling who ended up watching us perform!  The Chinese roll pretty tight when it comes to someone in their family doing something, so I guarantee the little girls...and boys performing probably had their parents, grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles, cousins, and 2nd and 3rd cousins there to watch!  WAIT.....this sounds a bit like my family!!!  And yes they probably all would have been there too if they were close enough to actually make it!!

Anyhow, as most of you have probably seen (via the YouTube video we posted via Facebook), it went well and I was actually pretty impressed that Chris was able to get all 14 of us to stay fairly well in-sync (we are talking about 20-40 years old here!).  We won't be winning any awards anytime soon, but I do have to admit, it was fun!  We had several of our friends come out and watch, so we all decided to stay out later and have a few drinks to celebrate and also to help celebrate my 35th birthday!  We had a great time....we drank way too much and stayed out way too late!  But even better was that Marte had agreed to stay the morning of her day off so that we could sleep in.  So Sunday morning rolls around and I hear Evan up at about 7:15 and shortly after that hear Marte getting him and bringing him down for breakfast.  Ahhhh, so I fall back asleep, never even hear a peep from Cooper and then wake up again at........10:00 AM!!!!  Wow, that was the best thing in the world!  I told Marte she couldn't have given me a better birthday present!!!!  I haven't slept in that late for at least 3 years, it was great!  Anyhow, I was fine the rest of the day....Andrew was a totally different story!  He napped on and off throughout the day (blaming me for keeping him out too late of course!) and finally recovered by dinner time when we decided to go out for my birthday!  We had a great meal and the boys must have sang me Happy Birthday at least 10 times!  I loved it!!

And oh yeah, after my late morning wake-up, I got my favorite - an ice cream cake - and we even had a piece to celebrate! What a great hangover breakfast!!  Thanks boys!!

Micaela's 5th birthday zoo party!

Early yesterday morning we headed to the Melaka Zoo for Micaela's 5th birthday party. It actually seemed like the perfect day for a zoo trip - partly cloudy and not too hot and humid - but that soon changed after we'd been there about 30 minutes.  The skies cleared and it turned out to be hot, hot, hot!  But this didn't seem to stop any of the kiddos....no matter how many times these kids have been to this zoo, it is always like the first visit for everyone!! They had a blast running around together, looking at the various animals!  Poor Cooper, he wanted so badly to get out of his stroller to try to run with the big kids, but I knew he'd never be able to keep up, so we ended up pushing him around the majority of the park.  We were able to catch a fun elephant show (which was conducted in Bahasa so we weren't sure what was actually said) where a Momma and baby elephant performed various tricks.  At the end of the show, the elephants sprayed water out of their trunks at the audience....luckily we weren't sitting in the front seats...but the kids really seemed to enjoy that part!

So after getting all hot and sweaty at the zoo, we headed over to McDonald's for some Happy Meals and ice cream to follow....we all know what kind of fun was had here with 15 or so kids!  After lunch, we actually headed back home because Mommy had her big kickboxing performance later in the evening and a night out with Daddy and friends to celebrate her 35th birthday!! Everyone else headed back to the Ocean Palms condos for some swimming and cake.  Since we'd had ice cream, the boys didn't even seem to miss the fact that it was a birthday party and they weren't getting cake.  Even so, it was like pulling teeth trying to get them to leave the rest of the kids who were still playing.  But once we did get out of there and made it home, both boys took a great nap!  We love birthday parties!!

One of E's best buddies, Maya, who is always watching out for him!
"Ohh my sweet little brother, are you ready to go on our zoo tour?"
It was a zoo party, so I had to get at least one picture of some animals....why I chose the rhinos, I have no idea!
Stopping for a group photo
"Alright Daniel, which animals are up next?"  Daniel was our safari guide - checking out his zoo map!
Stopping for a water break and catching the elephant show
Wallace, Evan and Daniel
Mommy and her 2 favorite...sweaty boys!
Another group shot at the end of our tour....on a very hot day!  Now let's go to McDonald's for some nuggets and ice cream!!

Heading back to Malaysia....

Let's see....where do I even begin, as I try to recount this most memorable trip back to our lovely home here in Malaysia?!?!?  Well, with the wonderful storms that OK had been experiencing, we thought we should move up our departure date from Muskogee a day earlier since all weather forecasts indicated below freezing temperatures with some sort of precipitation.  We didn't rearrange our flight schedule (which now in hindsight might have been the better thing to do!), but we did decide to go ahead and drive up to Tulsa a day earlier before all the yucky stuff hit and so that we didn't have to get up at 4am and leave while it was -1 outside!  So we checked into an airport hotel and settled in for the evening, thinking this was going to work out better anyhow, since we wouldn't have to get the boys up too early for our 7:55am flight to Houston.  And yes, even though it was very cold out, Tulsa didn't get much, if any, precipitation at all, so as you can imagine we were very perplexed when Andrew receives a message from our airline indicating that our flight out of Tulsa HAD BEEN CANCELLED!  So, Andrew gets up around 5am to find this message (30 minutes before we were set to receive a wake-up call) and then heads up to the front desk to check the monitors.  Yes it was true, OUR flight.... and only ONE other Southwest flight into Houston....had been cancelled.  Okay, what do we do now??  We are obviously missing our connecting flight in Houston to Tokyo, where we only had a less than 2 hour layover on the original schedule anyhow... So of course, Andrew gets on the phone with the airline to discuss our options.  It starts to get even better.........we can get on a number of flights to Houston of course, but the next 4 open seats onto Singapore aren't until Saturday...hello, it's Thursday at this point folks!  So we can go onto Houston, stay there for a couple of days, trying for some standby flights in the meantime....stay here in Tulsa and just try leaving again on Saturday (who knows what the weather is going to be doing then) or another option was to fly into Newark and try to get on an Asia bound flight, potentially on Friday (yes, that is what we want to do....go to the Northeast when there are winter storms brewing everywhere!)....so what do we do?  We sit and discuss our options a bit..... and then Andrew decides he is going to try calling the airlines again and JUST CHECK to make sure these are our only options.  Well, low and behold, a savior appears...in the form of a Continental airlines representative..... who says she can get us on a 1:30pm flight to Houston and a connecting flight to Tokyo the next morning, Friday, at 10:45am.  YES MA'AM, WE'LL TAKE IT! Yes, this does mean an overnight stay in Houston now, but we are getting closer to getting home at least!

Sooo, we take our time getting checked-out, head over to the airport, get checked in with ALL our luggage (did I mention the 6 large 50 lb bags we were hauling around in all this too!!) grab our lunch  and get ready to board our plane.  This actually was really nice because we took our time and never rushed one bit.  We got to Houston with no problems.....got all our luggage again and waited for the hotel shuttle.  Luckily they had a shuttle service so we could just turn over all bags to him and not worry about them again until we got into our room.  We originally thought we were somehow going to have to get ourselves and all the luggage on the airport tram over to the hotel, thank goodness that didn't happen!  Because of our delays, we actually got to catch the National Championship, so we were pleased about that part!  So the next morning, we loaded 'em up again....oh, don't let me forget to mention this was the first time we've all had to share one hotel room with only one baby bed....we weren't used to that and from our 2 very long nights....neither were the boys! Anyhow, we made it to the airport and our flight was on time.....that is until we get to the gate and have to wait to board an hour after we were originally scheduled to!!  Then once we were actually allowed to board, it was another hour before we actually took off. So yes, as you might have guessed, we are now very, very close to missing our connecting flight in Tokyo to Singapore.  Well, what can we do about it at this point.  It now looks like there is the possibility that we may be checking into yet another hotel in Toyko?!?!  During the nearly 14 hour flight, I won't even begin to talk about how the boys behaved.....can we really blame them though?!? Well yes, Evan screaming at the top of his lungs about 6 times all while everyone else is trying to sleep....even that was over the top for him!  That was lots of fun!  And yes, Cooper had a couple of mid-flight meltdowns, but the trip would not have been complete without them!! OHHH BUT CONTINUE READING, IT GETS EVEN BETTER!!  So it looks like we might have made up just enough time in-flight to MAYBE catch our next flight....if we can get through security fast enought. But after we disembark and head toward security, Andrew sees alot of people stopping off getting information from what looks to be airline reps, so he stops to check it out and finds out that the airline HAS ALREADY REBOOKED us on another flight on a different airline (Singapore airlines as opposed to Continental) that leaves in about 2 1/2 hours!! Whoa....that kind of thing would never happen in the US!!  We'd have to talk to somebody who would have to talk to somebody else who would then TRY to get us on another flight!!  Needless to say, we were ecstatic and now only 6 hours away from our final destination...woo hoo!!

Once we get through security, Andrew says he is going to check out the duty free while me and the boys go and grab some McDonalds (poor boys, they seem to live on chicken nuggets when we travel since the airline meals are always so appetizing, especially on these Asian bound flight - noodles and rice is all you ever get!) and that we will meet up at the gate.  Well, 7:00 is rolling around when we are set to board at 7:30 and Andrew is no where to be found!  I can't call him because my cell phone doesn't work for some reason and I have no idea where to go to start looking for him.  I start to panic and then ask if the gate can page him for me....this is the only thing I could come up with...and this is when they tell me "Ohhh Thompson, yes check for husband at service desk around the corner near the next gate".  I get over there...relieved to have at least found Andrew...to then find out they are having some sort of seating issues or something.  So as she is sitting there trying to ticket us for this new flight, the minutes are ticking away and everyone has boarded by this point.  We finally get the boarding passes and get on the flight as they are telling us they might not have gotten all our luggage on the plane! GREAT!!  That is fine, at this point we wouldn't expect any less...we'll just figure it out when we land.  At least we are on the flight and going to Singapore (oh one other tidbit...when we missed out 1st flight in Tulsa and thus put us a day behind, we also had to call and cancel our hotel room in Singapore and rebook for the following night, in which they had the audacity to tell us they would have to charge us another $150 to make the change...GREAT!).  SO, HERE'S THE CHERRY ON TOP....all is good and the boys have actually been pretty decent during this flight.  They get on, get settled and fall asleep rather quickly...which is good because it's late and everyone is sleeping.  So all the cabin lights are out and it's rather dark.  Cooper wakes up about 4 hours later and is in a decent mood, but wants snacks (of course) and to get out of his car seat for a bit.  Let me not forget to mention that the only seats they could get us on were 2 of the middle 4 seats - 2 on one row for Andrew and Evan and 2 on the row behind for Cooper and myself.  So we are hanging out and the flight attendant comes by with water and apple juice, so I decide that it will be okay for Coop to have some juice.  We sit and watch a bit of some show - the Michael Jackson documentary, I think it was - when all of a sudden Cooper makes this gagging motion!  UH-OH! So he spits up a bit on me and I then quickly set him back in his seat and look for the barf bag!  Well, I find it but CANNOT for the life of me get the darn thing opened (remember it is pitch dark and we are in the middle seats) and Cooper is spewing EVERYWHERE!! He does it about 3 more time...luckily, it wasn't the projectile type or else we would have had an even bigger mess, but it was all over him, his carseat, me and who knows what else!  So I get Andrew up and try to hand him Cooper after I cleaned as much off of him as possible first...all the while, the 2 guys on either side are oblivious to what has just happened!  I think because it was mainly apple juice that he threw up (he hadn't had much to eat all day long which was probably why it happened in the first place!) along with a few bits of the snacks I had just given him - colored gold fish and fruit juicys - it didn't smell as bad as it could have!  So once I get him out, crawl over the guy on the aisle seat, we unbuckle his car seat and try to get it cleaned out after getting Coop out of his clothes! Luckily, I had packed plenty of extra clothing for the boys so he was covered..but I was totally out of luck!  I have read so many articles that say to pack something for yourself and now I know why!  Anyhow, thankfully we were on this very wonderful Asian airline because the flight attendants were so very helpful (I'm not sure what we would have gotten had it been a Continental flight - probably some disgusted looks and grunts is about it), getting wet wash cloths and towels to clean out the seat and Cooper and finding bags to put all the smelly clothes and dirty rags in.  I am also so grateful we were at the very back (I mean next to last row) so that we didn't have the whole plane puking by looking or smelling it! Once we got it all cleaned up (including myself), we only had about an hour and a half left in the flight, so it wasn't SO bad!  We made it through and thoroughly thanked the flight crew for all their help on our way out!  YES, we finally made it!

I hadn't meant to include that last part in such detail, but as you can imagine, it is still such a vivid memory to this day and now I don't think I'll ever forget it...nor will Cooper!

So the last item of business was our luggage.  Once we make it through immigration, I immediately go look for the lost & found counter to inquire about our bags.  As it is completely dead in the airport since it's now about 1am, there is no one around to help me.  As I'm waiting to find someone, I notice that one of our bags is on the belt....hallelujiah!  At least one made it....and then I see a 2nd....and 3rd....and 4th....and well you get the picture...ALL OUR LUGGAGE MADE IT!!  God must have known we needed to catch at least one break on this trip!  All I can say is maybe the way everything went down was just the way it was supposed to be!  If we'd been on our original flight, the whole Cooper ordeal could have gone down much differently or who knows what else!!  Anyhow, just saying glad we made it safe and sound and that was all that really mattered!!

BUT WAIT....it wasn't over just yet!  We then make it over to the hotel with all our luggage to find out that the front desk doesn't have our new reservation!!  Luckily, they aren't booked so they can get us in a room, but she spends about 30 minutes trying to find the original reservation where we had already paid one price for the room.  She is trying to charge us the cancellation fee for the first room and a full rate...I don't think so, we already paid for it, lady!!  I leave Andrew to get it worked out, and about an hour later we are finally in our room!

Henry picks us up the next morning, an easy drive to Melaka and we are home and getting settled back into our home by 3pm.  AHHHHH, WE ARE FINALLY HOME!!  As excited as I am about moving back to the states sometime soon, please don't let it be in the next couple of months....I don't think I could take another trip like this one so soon!!

And I leave you with a couple of pictures I took of the boys in the Tulsa airport before the start of our "interesting" journey!  Guess we were too busy trying to find a way to get home that I didn't get any other mid-journey photos! Probably best I didn't, you wouldn't have seen many smiles from any of us!!! :-)

Some Nana & Pop Time

We were so happy to get some quality Nana & Pop time during our visit.  They were over to visit us in Malaysia right after Cooper was born and then we saw them again last Christmas, but it had been an entire year since we'd last seen them....and that was too long!!!  We do Skype with them once a week, but that just isn't the same!  In any case, the boys really enjoyed their time in Oklahoma... even though it seemed like they were at their worst behavior while we were there.  I'm not sure if it was being away from home and our daily routine and they were ready to get back to that after being away for nearly a month or if they are both just at that age where they just LOVE to test limits and boundaries...because they were doing a very good job of it! Cooper turned into a total bink baby - wanting his binkie throughout the day....or else screaming and whining throughout the day - even though he hasn't used a bink other than at naptime or bedtime for over a year now!  Let it be known though, that THAT came to an end as soon as we got off the last flight!  He soon learned we were back home and he could scream as loud as he wanted and as long as he wanted, but he wasn't getting it!!  Funny enough, it took one time and he never asked for it during the day again.  Now, we just need to work on him getting rid of it entirely.  This may be a different story.

Sorry, I totally digressed, this wasn't meant to be about my misbehaving boys....it was suppose to be about all the fun we had with Nana & Pop.....and that we did!  We made a few trips to the mall to ride the train - the boys absolutely loved it - and play in the play area.  We went to Pop's bank to visit him one day.  We went out and ate pancakes at IHOP one morning while Nana was at the dentist (although I would have thought the boys would have enjoyed the pancakes a bit more...they were all about the bacon instead....of course, I couldn't blame them - it was some darn good bacon...this coming from the "pork deprived" girl).  Since the weather was so cold, it was hard to do things outside, but we did manage one day of riding bikes outside.  We made a couple of trips to Wal-Mart to pick up things we can't get here...my heaven! We ate and ate and ate everything we can't get here...we ate more Chet's chili dogs than I can even count.  Nana  colored, did puzzles and played treasure hunt with the boys.  Pop made s'mores with one night in the fireplace since it was too cold to do it outside.  It was just fun, fun, fun!! So thanks Nana & Pop for opening your house up to us for nearly 2 weeks, we had the best time!!
Playing fort in the box that Coop's present came in
Making s'mores...I love how Cooper just decided that watching the big boys was fun enough!  He did so well so wanting to do one of his own.  Of course, he LOVED eating them!  Evan (my non sweet tooth) had a couple of bites and Cooper wanted his and the rest of Evan's!
They decided they didn't need Mom to ride along with them this time - they were big boys!
Trying at a family picture
Cooper encouraging Evan as he did a great job at peddling the big wheel bike all by himself! Go E!
On a treasure hunt with Nana looking for treasures for a treasure box of Nana's that he found
Cooper wasn't sure what he was looking for, but it sure did look fun and he knew his big brother was having a great time at it!
Trying out the new camera..
Let's see how it captures moving "objects"
And sweet Sadie....the boys also loved on Sadie quite a bit!  Since she is a bit older, she liked to keep to herself so the boys only bothered her when she was laying on the couch or it was ready for treat time....they LOVED to give her treats!
Evan doing one of his puzzles...Mommy trying out her new camera again....and yes, that is my Corona in the background...puzzle making is a strenuous activity!
Singing songs with E the night before we head out!
Pop and Evan feeding Sadie her treats!
Nana and the boys on a merry-go-round at the Tulsa mall, where we were trying to kill a bit of time before checking into the airport hotel (read the next post for this interesting story!!)

Thanks again Nana and Pop for the great visit, we hope we see you again soon....let's definitely not make it as long as we did the last time :-)

Hadlock Christmas Party in OKC

On the Saturday after New Year's Day, we headed over to OKC for the Hadlock Christmas party.  We usually don't make it every year because it doesn't always fall during the time we are visiting in OK, but luckily this year we did!  It was really great to see everyone and also great that the boys had a chance to meet everyone on Nana's side of the family.  There was also some really yummy food and some good OSU football going on.  We also got the chance to get a good Thompson family picture that we weren't able to get while everyone was visiting in Muskogee....
I was so nervous about E holding little Natalie, thinking he might get tired of holding her and just let go of her, but he did great!  I think he had seen Drew holding her a couple of times before so I guess he thought he needed his big cousin time with Natalie too!
Luckily, Cooper didn't want to copy his big brother this time....he was content just getting in the picture!

Since we were in OKC, we decided to spend the night with John & Leigh so we could get in a little more visiting time. Evan was thrilled to be able to go over and play at "Drew's house", since we missed visiting them at their house last year. It was so cold that they didn't much time outside, but after seeing Drew and Max's wooden playgym, they just had to try it out for a bit.  I missed getting any photos, but I heard there was alot of snow in the shoes and Cooper not wanting to wear his hat, so it ended rather quickly!  Maybe next time...as Evan always says!  The boys had a great time playing together...Drew and Evan running around...Cooper trying like crazy to keep up with the big boys....and Max trying his hardest to keep up with Cooper in his walker!  The older boys even got to stay up really late and then Drew was nice enough to give up his big bed (and sleep in his mommy and daddy's room) so Evan could sleep in it!  Thanks Drew...and John & Leigh!

We had a great time visiting - Jeff, Jenn and Natalie even stopped by so we got a little more Natalie time....and Jeff & Jenn time too!  Being on the newborn schedule, they could only stay for a while since she had to get home to eat and then off to bed for the night!  The rest of us finished the evening watching Tech win their bowl game...or I guess maybe I was the only one who actually stayed up until midnight to watch the finish! Awesome game, by the way...GET YOUR GUNS UP!   The next morning after breakfast, we headed back to Muskogee to spend some more quality time with Nana & Pop.  But we first stopped off at Best Buy to get my birthday present, a new Nikon DSLR...happy birthday to me!!  We actually bought it in OKC, but they didn't have it in stock, so we had to stop by a Best Buy in Tulsa to pick it up.  I'm so excited, I can hardly wait to start using it!
Pizza for dinner...yum!!
Cooper trying out Max's exersaucer
Uncle A and baby Natalie
Uncle John and "Scoop"...as Aunt Leigh likes to call him!
Me and my darling nephews Max (14 months) and Drew (5)
Wish my boys could pose for pictures with me like this...everyone looking at the camera WITH smiles!!

Brooke visits us in Oklahoma

So my dear, sweet cousin (who is much like a sister to me) from Dallas came to visit us while we were staying with Nana and Pop in Muskogee.  Because she is now living in Dallas and working full-time (go Brooke!), it made it much easier for her to make th 3 1/2 hour drive to Oklahoma instead of trying to figure out a time to make the 9+ hour drive to Laredo (which in all reality probably would not have happened)!  So we were very thankful that Nana & Pop were sweet enough to share their time with us, with her!  She was only in for the day, New Year's Day, and then headed out again the next morning.  She was actually headed back to Dallas to pick up her boyfriend and then they headed onto San Antonio to catch Texas Tech in their bowl game, which she didn't even have tickets for (but luckily managed to get some when they got there!).  All this after going out for New Year's eve the night before....oh what it is to be young...I can hardly remember when I had that much energy to do ALL that in just one weekend!

Anyhow, we had a great visit and loved seeing her.  When she arrived, the boys were napping and she could hardly wait for them to wake up so she could play with them.  Well, an hour after we had her outside playing (it was one of the 1st days in about 5 where the sun actually came out and warmed it up enough to get some outside time), I think she could hardly wait for them to go back to bed.  I think they gave her a pretty good workout!  Amazily, they both warmed up to her really quickly so they BOTH had her running around with them.  Later in the evening, Evan had her running around the house playing one of his latest favorites - duck, duck, goose!  And for bathtime, he even asked if she would bath him.  I think it went something like "Brooke, will YOU give me a bath tonight?  Nana has a really nice bathtub....c'mon let me show you!"

"I'll be riding my own tricycle in no time, Mom"
This was after our race back into the house.  We asked who was the winner and Evan said he was! We then asked who was the loser and this was Cooper's response!
Silly faces!
Crazy faces!!
Some smiles...
And an almost perfect family picture...if E wouldn't have had such a silly expression (probably in the middle of talking!)
Goodbye hugs and kisses!!

Thanks little Brooke for making the trip out to see us, it meant so very much to us!  We love you and can't wait to see you again!  Keep up the good work - we are very proud of you!! But stay away from the tatoo parlors......please!!! :-)
